Volvo Ocean Race Monthly Update

THE TEAMS
      During the past month,the comittee has accepted registrations from four new syndicates, three wishing to remain confidential. The announced entry is D-VOR and comes from top French single-handed sailor, Christophe Auguin.

 THE BOATS
      Current owners of the V.O.60 class boats are being encouraged to take part in regattas internationally. The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) has agreed to Category C status for the V.O.60 class beginning this year and continuing through until the end of 2002
      Coming up is the Skandia Life Cowes Week which will consist of the Channel Race starting on 31st July, a special 'round the island race' on Tuesday 3rd August, a Solent inshore on Wednesday 4th August and a V.O.60 class start in the Fastnet Race on Saturday 7th August.

RIO DE JANEIRO
IS SOLE STOPOVER IN SOUTH AMERICA
      After sailing many miles across the Southern Ocean and round Cape Horn, Rio de Janerio will be a very welcome sight for the crews. 
      The Volvo Ocean Race will be in Rio during the period February 19th to March 9th, 2002 and the city will host the competing teams in a purpose built race village set at the Marina da Gloria.

LA ROCHELLE SELECTED AGAIN
      In 1998, La Rochelle became the first ever French stopover port in the history of the race and it has again been selected as the French port of call in 2002

KEIL BECOMES FINAL DESTINATION
      Kiel is to become the final destination of the Volvo Ocean Race Round the World and the concluding celebration which will last several days, will be an event of international importance
      The venue from June 7th to 12th, 2002 will be the area around the Kieler Yacht-Club, situated near the former Olympic port. The crossing of the finishing line can be watched on Sunday, June 9th 2002 from the promenade on Hindenburgufer.
